Waste management changes delayed until late 2027

The City of Mississauga will not take over waste management from Peel Region next year, as originally planned. Instead, the transfer date has been pushed back until October 1, 2027.

The City says that the revised start date aligns with the new waste collection contracts the city is currently signing. They also need more time to hire staff and develop a new IT system.

Also, on Jan. 1, 2026 the new producer-led recycling program will come into force and the city did not want any overlap with the garbage transition. The new date also avoids the peak winter operation period, which the city felt would be beneficial.

The transfer in responsibility for waste management from Peel Region to Mississauga was championed by Mayor Carolyn Parrish earlier this year and adopted by council in March. Mayor Parrish argued at the time that it would lead to better service and financial savings for the city.

The new transition date was approved by city council at their September 10 meeting.
