Provincial government provides $82 million for new Scarborough Health Network emergency department
The Ontario provincial government has announced $82 million in funding at the groundbreaking of a new emergency room department at Centenary Hospital.
The ER — now named the Northpine Emergency Department — is at one of three Scarborough Health Network hospitals, this one located at Ellesmere and Morningside, just west of University of Toronto Scarborough Campus.
“The new Northpine Emergency Department will help us meet growing demand with an innovative model of care designed to improve the patient experience and support our health-care teams,” says David Graham, President and CEO of Scarborough Health Network. “We are grateful to the Government of Ontario for its partnership in helping us build for the future.”
The new facility will add 36,000 square feet to the complex, with a stated objective of reducing wait times, streamlining care and replacing aging infrastructure.
“Centenary Hospital has been a cornerstone of care in Scarborough for generations and today marks a crucial step in modernizing its infrastructure for the future,” said Vijay Thanigasalam, the MPP for Scarborough – Rouge Park. “The start of construction on this brand-new emergency department will connect local residents to expanded, convenient care closer to home.”
The construction will be done over multiple phases, to keep the hospital operating throughout the project. Completion is expected in late 2027. Prior to the groundbreaking, external road work and landscaping was already undertaken.
The new facility will add 36,000 square feet to the complex.
The Scarborough Health Network receives 200,000 patients per year across its three emergency departments, including Centenary.
This enhanced ER will have over 50 examination rooms, nine specialized airborne isolation spaces, a new fracture clinic and a cardiac diagnostics and arrhythmia clinic.
The groundbreaking and fundraising announcement from the province follows a $30 million gift from The Northpine Foundation announced in June towards the health network.
