Peel Region Sees Drop in Crime Amid Police Expansion
It’s only half way through the year, but the numbers in Peel Region now show that
crime is trending downward overall. This shift comes after Peel Regional Police received a major budget boost, allowing for more resources, equipment, and personnel.
Car thefts have seen the sharpest drop, with reported incidents falling from 3,316
between January 1 and May 31, 2024, to 2,135 during the same period in 2025, a decrease of more than a third. Other offences, including robbery, break and enter, mischief, and theft from vehicles, have also shown notable declines.
In Mississauga alone, break and enter cases dropped from 133 in June
2024 to just 70 in June 2025, with ongoing investigations making up a larger portion of the cases this year.
Fraud cases in Mississauga have followed a similar trend, falling from 1,285 in the first five months of 2024 to 933 this year. While the total number is lower, the
majority of these cases remain under investigation.
Despite the overall decline in crime, certain categories have risen. Sexual assault and impaired driving have both increased compared to last year. Police say these cases remain a focus for enforcement and prevention efforts.
In addition to crime statistics, Peel Regional Police
have also improved their 911 call response times dramatically. In 2023, callers waited an average of 63 seconds, with just 38% of calls answered within 15 seconds. By 2024, the average wait time had dropped to just 14 seconds, and more than 76% of calls were answered within 15 seconds.
The police force has also welcomed 218 of its planned 300 new recruits for the year. Salaries for these positions range from $54,35 for a Cadet, Second Class to $117,229 for a First Class Constable, reflecting steady increases with rank and experience.
Alongside new hires, Peel Police have made head-lines with five major press conferences announcing the results of large-scale investigations: Project Pelican, Project Ghost, Project Outsource, Project Erase, and Project Night Train. These operations led to 182 individuals facing a combined 2,565 charges for crimes ranging from street racing and drug trafficking to home invasions and assault.
There have been two murders so far this year in Mississauga, both of which remain under active investigation. While any loss of life is tragic, the homicide count remains lower than in some recent years, reflecting the broader trend of decreasing violent crime across the region.
