Alpha’s Discovery Kids: Toddlers learning science and tech

Toddlers learning science and tech at innovative local daycare. Meadowvale and Erin Mills locations of Alpha’s Discovery Kids.

At an award-winning preschool and daycare in Meadowvale, toddlers are making scientific discoveries and learning about technology and engineering. The “unique curriculum” at Alpha’s Discovery Kids was developed by daycare owner, early childhood education specialist and author, Susie Beghin. Beghin recently spoke to MPulse about her passion for children’s early education, running a successful business, and her love for Mississauga.

“Parents love our program. We nurture and educate the whole child: mind, body and spirit,” Beghin said. “Our curriculum is STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) based and built on the 4 pillars of learning.”

From infancy through kindergarten, children learn through play at Alpha’s Discovery Kids. There are two locations in Mississauga, one in Meadowvale and one in Erin Mills and another location in Oakville. Beghin said she’s been in the daycare business since 2007 and opened Alpha’s Discovery Kids in 2012. Demand for quality daycare is high and Beghin says her daycares run waiting lists, with some parents signing up their babies as soon as they find out they’re expecting.

With the federal government’s $10 per day daycare plan there are more parents than ever looking for daycare space. Beghin says her daycares’ focus on early education sets them apart from the competition and routinely sees them winning parents’ choice awards, year after year.

Beghin says she’s “personally involved in every hiring decision” as she looks to find staff who not only have the required education and experience but are also “aligned with my values and vision.” Beghin also visits other daycares as a consultant, training their staff on her curriculum and educational philosophy.

“I love Mississauga,” Beghin said. “It’s a vibrant city.” She said she could’ve chosen anywhere in the GTA to open her daycares but chose Mississauga because of the local community. “There are a lot of young families in Mississauga and I wanted to be part of that energy,” she said.
