E-bike battery fire in apartment unit causes injuries

Toronto Fire Chief Jim Jessop is warning about e-bike battery safety after a fire in the east end erupted.

A lithium-ion battery caught fire in an apartment on Lawrence Ave East. The fire caused significant damage to the unit and injured four people. Children were among those injured.

“This incident is an important reminder that litihium-ion batteries can pose serious risks,” Chief Jessop said in a statement.

Two years ago, an e-bike burst into flames on a TTC subway car, causing excessive smoke. It was considered lucky that the fire happened when the subway was stopped at a station with the doors open.

The City of Toronto has since implemented a seasonal ban of e-bikes and e-scooters on their property from Nov. 15 to April 15 of each year. This was done due to “the increased fire risk due to the presence of salt and water.”
