City gets updates on all Mississauga transit developments

City staff recently presented Mississauga council with an update on all rapid transit projects underway in the city. These include the Hazel McCallion Line, the Dundas East Bus Rapid Transit, the Lakeshore Bus Rapid Transit, the Downtown Transit Mobility Hub and the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension. Both the Hazel McCallion Line and the Eglinton Crosstown West are owned and led by Metrolinx.

Metrolinx CEO Michael Lindsay also provided an update to council on April 22 on the progress of its projects but the update was held in a closed session that the public was not allowed to access. The McCallion Line’s slow progress, ongoing construction and traffic delays to date have been a regular source of frustration for Mississauga residents and business owners.

City staff, however, say they are working closely with Metrolinx and its contractor, Mobilinx, to advance the construction of the McCallion Line wherever and whenever they can. Carolyn Ryall, Director of the Rapid Transit Program Office for Mississauga told council that residents should now see “an increased presence of crews” working on the line as the city has already issued 65 permits and licenses so far this year, which is an increase over last year and evidence that the pace of work is picking up.

She also said the city is “actively applying lessons learned” from other Metrolinx projects, such as Toronto’s recently opened Finch West LRT. When Finch West opened in February this year it was widely criticized for being too slow. Toronto is now installing enhanced signals at intersections along the route, something that Ryall says Mississauga is also looking into for the Hazel McCallion Line.
