Ontario fire code brings in new carbon monoxide rules. Homes must now have detectors on every floor.
If your home has a fuel burning appliance, such as a gas furnace, a fireplace or an attached garage, you are now required to install carbon monoxide detectors on every level of the house, including the basement.
This new update to the Ontario Fire Code took effect on January 1, 2026. Carbon monoxide detectors are also still required adjacent to all sleeping areas.
Known as the “silent killer,” the colourless, tasteless and odourless gas kills approximately 300 Canadians every year by accidental poisoning. Symptoms of exposure include headache, weakness, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, sleepiness, confusion, blurred vision and shortness of breath.
Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services recommends you familiarize yourself with the sound of your carbon monoxide alarm and test it monthly, along with your smoke detectors. If the alarm goes off, exit the building and call 911.
Landlords are required to ensure there are working carbon monoxide and smoke alarms in accordance with all provincial regulations.
Fines for non-compliance can reach $50,000 for individuals and $500,000 for corporations.
