Here’s how to plan a fun staycation this summer

A good summer staycation can feel refreshing, affordable, and memorable without leaving your city. The key is to break routine on purpose: plan a few special activities, explore nearby places you usually ignore, and treat the days like a real getaway.

Start with a theme

Pick a loose theme for your staycation so it feels intentional instead of random. You could do a “local explorer” week, a “relaxation retreat,” or a “family fun” weekend. A theme helps you choose activities, meals, and even music or outfits that make the break feel different from ordinary days.

Explore your own area

Become a tourist in your own town by visiting places you’ve never had time to see. Local museums, historic sites, parks, public beaches, and neighborhood trails can offer a fresh perspective without the stress of travel. A simple day trip to a nearby city or town can also give you the feeling of being away while still letting you sleep in your own bed.

Make home feel special

Try low-cost adventures

Summer staycations work best when you balance rest with activities that spark curiosity. Go hiking or biking, rent kayaks, visit a local pool, or pack a picnic for the park. If you want something more social, invite friends or neighbors for a potluck, backyard games, or a casual block-party style hangout.

Make room for rest

A staycation should not feel like a packed schedule disguised as vacation. Leave time for reading, sleeping in, long walks, and unhurried mornings. The point is to recharge, so keep at least one day light and unstructured.
