Only 5 of the city’s 160 markets are in Scarborough
Toronto’s markets saw a surge in interest in June, after the City formally launched Public Markets Week.
From June 15 – 21, the City of Toronto hosted events and activations at public markets across the city, and has also launched a new website that maps out all the markets.
“Public markets are central to communities across the city, from farmers’ markets to neighbourhood bazaars, Toronto public markets act as iconic destinations and powerful spaces of inclusion and community connection,” reads a City of Toronto info sheet. “Toronto boasts more than 160 community-based public markets that support more than 4,000 urban and rural entrepreneurs.”
However, of those 160 public markets that are showcased on the city’s website, only 5 of them are in Scarborough. While the vast majority of them are located downtown, there are many in midtown. North York and Etobicoke also boast slightly more locations than those east of Victoria Park.
Scarborough Centre Councillor Michael Thompson helped launch a tour of local shopping in the Golden Mile area for Public Markets Week. The tour was led by Howard Tam, from Eat More Scarborough, as he led participants through strip plazas, flea markets and grocery stores.
