Mississauga’s number of jobs, businesses goes flat

The City of Mississauga’s annual employee survey dashboard shows that the number of jobs and businesses in the city has been virtually flat year-over-year.

For 2024, the survey recorded 501,501 jobs — which is marked as a 1% increase from 2023. As for the number of businesses in Mississauga, that tally is down by 1% to 24,090.

There are no numbers for the current year as the data is compiled based on complete calendar years.

These numbers are not out of step with other cities in the region. According to the federal government’s job bank “employment in the Toronto economic region increased by 42,900 (+1.1%) from June 2024 to June 2025.” Canadian GDP growth for the year hovered around 1%.

“Mississauga is the second strongest economy in Ontario,” Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish said in a social media post. “We are fighting way above our weight for our population number. More people into our city to work than those who leave for jobs outside.”

The city’s interactive dashboard shows that the densest and most numerous category of jobs are manufacturing positions close to Pearson International Airport — which has long been the case.

Professional services also cluster near the airport, with retail and health care jobs playing a dominant role in other parts of the City.
