VIA Rail has abruptly announced that they will cease providing service at Guildwood Station effective October 25.

The major service change was announced late September as a footnote to other route changes.

“VIA Rail will no longer serve Guildwood and Malton to improve overall travel times, given their proximity to Toronto Union Station and easy access to GO Transit and other local transit services,” says a release from VIA.

Local MPP Andrea Hazell right away took to organizing a town hall meeting to address the matter.

“For many Scarborough residents, this decision will mean longer, more difficult and less accessible journeys,” Hazell said it a press release. “It also threatens to cut Scarborough off from a national passenger rail network that should connect communities, not leave them behind.”

Hazell is calling for a moratorium on the service cut and for VIA to publicly release the ridership data. She’s also calling for public consultation with local residents.
