Funding follows polling that shows residents support cycling for off road recreation more than commuting on roads.
Mississauga is getting upgraded “active transportation” infrastructure on some of its most popular trails thanks to an $8.7 million investment from the Federal government.
The Culham Trail, which runs for 13.5km and follows the Credit River, is visited by 500,000 people every year. The federal money will be used to modernize a 4-kilometre stretch of trail between Erindale Park and the Riverwood Conservancy.
Due to severe flood damage, some portions of this trail have been closed since 2004. Not only will these damaged sections be repaired and reopened, with new flood protection built in, but cyclists and pedestrians can also look forward to new seating, signage, a bike-share station, landscaping and an outlook viewing area.
The federal funds will also go towards the 65-metre pedestrian and cycling bridge currently being built across the Credit River, north of Lakeshore Road. This bridge will link Port Credit Memorial Park and the Port Credit Royal Canadian Legion, giving pedestrians and cyclists a safe crossing, separated from vehicle traffic, to the Port Credit GO Station.
These investments align with popular public opinion in Mississauga about active transportation according to survey results published in the June 2026 Update to the Cycling Master Plan.
This report noted that over 60% of people who rode a bike last year did so for “fun” “exercise” or “being outside/connected to nature” and view cycling as a form of recreation more than a practical mode of transportation.
Survey respondents also said they preferred “safe cycling infrastructure for all, separating cyclists from vehicles, and ensuring cyclists feel comfortable crossing intersections and highway bridges.”
The Port Credit Active Transportation Bridge is scheduled to open later this fall. The Culham Trail modernization and upgrade is underway, with the flood protection component expected to be finished next spring. There is no opening date yet for the new viewing outlook and other planned amenities.
