City manager to review winter maintenance concerns

Toronto City Council has assigned the city manager to review the effectiveness of winter maintenance and whether contractors are fulfilling their obligations.

“One key issue is the gap between reports claiming that 100% of sidewalks were cleared and the reality, where many residents report that no plows had visited their areas,” explains Scarborough North Councillor Michael Thompson.

“The city manager will investigate whether the private contractors have met their obligations under their contracts and will take necessary steps to hold them accountable, including recovering any public funds if needed,” Coun. Thompson explains.

The recent winter saw many residents across Scarborough voice concerns over poor performance when it comes to plowing of roads, snow clearing and salting operations.

Coun. Thompson adds: “The evaluation will explore various options to enhance winter maintenance, including renegotiating or even breaking existing contracts, improving the city’s fleet of winter equipment, and acquiring more advanced equipment to handle heavier snowfalls.”
