Part of Kingston Road speed limit to drop to 50km

Toronto City Council will soon vote on whether or not to lower the speed limit on Kingston Road between Midland Road and Brimley Road from 60 km/hr to 50 km/hr.

This comes after Scarborough Community Council voted in favour of the change in July, moving the matter on for a confirmation vote to the citywide council.

In a document prepared by City staff, they state that this reduction in the speed limit on the busy road used by many commuters will support their Speed Management Strategy outlined in Vision Zero 2.0 – Road Safety Plan.

The St. John Henry Newman Catholic School is on the side south of Kingston Road along that stretch and the school parent council wrote to Scarborough Community Council to voice their concerns.

“At the end of the school day there are usually a large number of our students congregated in a small, crowded area waiting for the bus to pick them up going east,” reads the letter from Parent Council Chair Tanya Baksh. “The students are waiting so close to Kingston Road with many vehicles speeding past and [we are] concerned someone is going to be fatally hurt one of these days.”

Baksh says they are in support of the speed limit reduction but their other major concern is that the TTC was considering moving the bus stop further west away from the school closer to Chine Drive. The school community wishes to see the bus stop closer to the school.
