Liberals sweep Scarborough in federal election

Scarborough voters chose to paint the town red on April 28, sending a full slate of Liberals to represent them in the House of Commons.

While a number of the ridings were renamed as their boundaries were adjusted, the Liberal MPs are all familiar names who have previously served in office.

Michael Couteau, a former long-time Ontario Liberal MPP, represented Don Valley East in the House of Commons and is now the MP for the newly named Scarborough – Woburn.

Salma Zahid has been re-elected, and serves the newly renamed Scarborough Centre – Don Valley East.

The eastern Scarborough riding that re-elected Gary Anandasangaree is now known as Scarborough—Guildwood—Rouge Park.

Other re-elected Liberal MPs continue to hold office in the ridings that go by the same names they have previously served. These include Shaun Chen in Scarborough North, Jean Yip in Scarborough – Agincourt and Bill Blair in Scarborough Southwest.

While polling from a year ago projected that many Scarborough ridings were expected to elect Conservative MPs, the replacement of Justin Trudeau with Mark Carney saw fortunes change. This is the same phenomenon that played out in other regions of the country.

Another national factor that also played out on the ground in Scarborough is the collapse of support for the NDP.

For example, in Scarborough North the NDP candidate typically receives around 5,000 votes. But in this recent election they only received 1,500.

Likewise, Conservative candidates received significantly greater support in Scarborough than in past recent elections. It just wasn’t enough to for any of them to win.

In Scarborough North, the Conservatives doubled their support from last time — from 7,500 to 15,000 votes.
