The August 21 deadline to register or withdraw as a candidate for mayor or councillor in the upcoming Mississauga municipal elections has passed. The names of candidates who will be appearing on the ballot in the October 26 vote is now locked in.
There are 14 people registered to run for mayor. The most well-known names are the incumbent mayor Carolyn Parrish, who is seeking re-election, and former mayor Bonnie Crombie, who is seeking a political comeback after quitting the mayoralty in mid-term to become Ontario Liberal leader.
Councillors Dipika Damerla and Alvin Tedjo have also registered to run for mayor again. They will not be able to seek re-election to their council seats this time. During the race to replace Crombie, they were able to run for mayor while remaining on council because it was a by-election. This time, they cannot appear on the ballot for two positions so had to make a choice prior to August 21.
Voters will also select their school trustees during the election. Several of these positions have already been acclaimed. This means only one person registered for the nomination by the August 21 deadline, and so by default is acclaimed to the position and takes on the role automatically without being voted in.
