Getting ready for back-to-school—and the busy fall ahead

September isn’t just about new pencils, but getting back into the routine and preparing for fall activities.

Back-to-school season is about more than buying pencils and packing lunches. For families, it marks the return of routines, early mornings, homework, and a calendar that can quickly fill with practices, clubs, lessons, and appointments. A little preparation now can make the transition feel far less hectic.

Start with the basics. Review school supply lists, label clothing and personal items, and set up a dedicated spot at home for backpacks, lunch bags, shoes, and important papers.

A simple “launch pad” near the door reduces the morning scramble and helps children build independence. It is also a good time to sort through closets, check that outdoor gear still fits, and make sure everyone has layers, rainwear, and sturdy footwear for changing fall weather.

Re-establishing routines before the first day can also ease the adjustment. Gradually move bedtimes and wake-up times closer to the school schedule, especially after a relaxed summer.

Create a realistic morning plan that includes breakfast, getting dressed, and leaving the house without rushing. Families may also want to plan a few easy weeknight meals and stock the pantry with lunch-friendly staples.

Fall activities deserve just as much attention. Before registering for sports, music lessons, tutoring, clubs, or community programs, sit down as a family and look at the full calendar. Consider travel time, homework, rest, costs, and each child’s interest—not just what is available.

A packed schedule may seem exciting in September but become exhausting by October. Leaving open evenings for family dinners, reading, free play, and downtime is often just as valuable as another activity.

Talk with children about what they are looking forward to and what worries them.

Use a shared calendar, whether on paper or digitally, to track school dates, practices, performances, fees, and parent commitments. Keep emergency contacts current, book any needed medical or dental appointments, and check equipment early.

Hockey skates, soccer cleats, instrument cases, and dance shoes all have a way of disappearing or becoming too small over the summer.

Finally, talk with children about what they are looking forward to and what worries them. New teachers, friendships, workloads, and activities can bring mixed emotions. Listening without immediately trying to solve every concern helps children feel supported.

The goal is not a perfectly organized fall. It is a calmer, more connected start—one that leaves room for learning, fun, and the occasional unexpected Monday morning.
