North America’s largest Hindu statue unveiled in Mississauga

The Hindu Heritage Centre in Mississauga is now home to North America’s largest statue of Lord Ram — standing 51 feet tall. The statue is almost as tall as a five storey building.

The statue is known as a murti — meaning a sacred icon used in worship for Hindus.

An unveiling ceremony took place over the long weekend, on August 4, and was attended by thousands of people.

The statue was crafted in Delhi with fibreglass and steel frame.

The unveiling was attended by a number of local dignitaries, including Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish, local Liberal MP and cabinet minister Rechie Valdez and leader of the official federal opposition Andrew Scheer.

Mayor Parrish described the murti as “a truly spectacular landmark for Mississauga’s Hindu community.”
