The Peel Regional Police Association (PRPA) has broken with their longstanding tradition of not endorsing any political candidates for office and is supporting Alvin Tedjo to be Mayor of Mississauga.
“Public safety cannot be reactive. It requires leaders wiling to have difficult conversations before a crisis becomes tomorrow’s headlines,” PRPA President Adrian Woolley said in a press release that was issued on Sept. 21. “We are confident Alvin has a clear understanding of what’s needed for public safety and to tackle crime on our streets.”
The PRPA represents over 3,800 uniform and civilian members within Peel police. It’s unknown how many are Mississauga residents and voters. However, this endorsement may serve to motivate other voters who place public safety and crime as a top concern.
“Our frontline officers know that we cannot afford more of the same,” Tedjo said at a press conference alongside PRPA leadership. “After a decade of inaction, break-ins, auto theft, and shootings are up. My community safety plan will support our front line officers and put City Hall back in the business of keeping you safe.”
Tedjo has served as the councillor for Ward 7 during this recent term. He had previously run for Mayor in the 2024 by-election to replace Bonnie Crombie, placing second behind the winner Carolyn Parrish
Public opinion polling has typically placed Tedjo in third or fourth place, behind Parrish and Crombie who are seen as neck and neck. An August Liaison Strategies poll had Parrish and Crombie tied at 35%, with Councillor Dipika Damerla at 18% and Tedjo at 12%.
