Mississauga Fights for Stronger Tenant Protections as Heritage Glen Seniors’ Legacy Lives On

On March 19, 2024, residents of Chartwell Glen Heritage Retirement Residence learned their home would close by July 31, 2024. The announcement left 205 seniors facing uncertainty, many of whom had lived there for decades, benefiting from affordable rent.

For these seniors, it wasn’t just about relocating— it meant losing friendships, routines, and community. Some had chosen the location to stay close to family, making their displacement even more heartbreaking. As families scrambled for alternatives, the community responded with outrage.

Mississauga fight for strong tenant protections for which determined residents and loved ones formed the Heritage Glen Defense Committee. They lobbied at City and Regional Councils, organized demonstrations, and engaged the media. Their mission: demand stronger tenant protections, longer eviction notice periods, and prevent sudden closures.

At Mississauga City Council, I urged Provincial and Federal intervention. While the province cited existing laws, Mississauga strengthened renoviction by laws. Our legal team developed a framework requiring landlords to follow strict eviction protocols and secure renovation permits. This process is in its final stages.

Despite efforts, the toll on seniors was severe. Some found stable housing, while others struggled. Tragically, some passed away due to natural causes or stress.

Now, we look ahead. Mississauga invites residents to fight for strong tenant protections and help shape our renoviction by-law:

  • Protect tenants from unlawful renovictions
  • Ensure landlords follow legal procedures
  • Promote fair rentals
