Liberals sweep Mississauga ridings

The federal Liberals did very well in Mississauga during the recent national election, winning all six of the city’s federal ridings.

The Conservatives though greatly increased their vote count in these ridings, they just didn’t win any seats due to the collapse of the NDP and all of those votes then going to the Liberals.

Five of the six Liberal MPs for the area were re-elected, having previously served in their positions. They are Peter Fonseca (Mississauga East — Cooksville), Iqwinder Gaheer (Mississauga – Malton), Iqra Khalid (Mississauga – Erin Mills), Charles Sousa (Mississauga – Lakeshore) and Rechie Valdez (Mississauga — Streetsville).

The newcomer to the mix is Fares Abu Al Soud, who represents Mississauga Centre. He is the first Palestinian born politician to be elected to the House of Commons. He is also one of the first to be born in the 21st century, being younger than 25 years old.

Al Soud had the support of Omar Alghabra, who was the Liberal MP in the riding for prior terms. Before Alghabra, Mayor Carolyn Parrish was the Member of Parliament for the area.

This election was also marked by a higher voter turnout than in the previous 2021 election.

For example, in Mississauga – Streetsville, Conservative candidate and area councillor Sue McFadden receiver over 27,000 votes. This is 10,000 more than the Conservative candidate received last time. However, Rechie Veldez also increased her vote count from 24,000 to over 31,000.

The riding had a turnout of over 50,000 votes in 2021, but that surged to almost 61,000 this year.
