MiWay transit soon to be free for military members and veterans

MiWay transit soon to be free for military members and veterans. Council motion puts Mississauga in line with other transit operators in the region.

Public transit in Mississauga will soon be free for Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members, reservists and veterans.

This comes after a city council motion was approved, having been put forward by Councillor Dipika Damerla and seconded by Councillor Brad Butt.
The idea is far from new, as GO Transit and UP Express currently provide free service to CAF members.

The text of the motion to council notes that “members of the Canadian Armed Forces commuting from Mississauga to Moss Park Armoury or Fort York Armoury [in downtown Toronto] benefit from complimentary travel on MiWay as a result of the One Fare Program, while the same members commuting entirely within Mississauga to access The Toronto Scottish Regiment Armoury are required to pay the full MiWay fare.”

As justification for expanding the free fares, the motion also notes that “many serving members, particularly Reservists, are facing increasing financial pressures due to the rising cost of living in Mississauga and the broader region, while balancing military duties, civilian employment, and family responsibilities”.

City council has instructed public service staff to come up with an implementation to outline the details. The new rules will come into effect after that process has concluded.
