Mississauga municipal campaign officially underway. May 1 was the opening day to sign up to run for Mayor and City Councillor.
The race has officially begun. Anyone planning to run for Mayor, Councillor or School Trustee in the City of Mississauga can now sign up to do so. May 1 was the official start of the 2026 municipal election season, as that was the day candidates were able to register as a candidate.
The requirements to run for office are simple, although there is significant paperwork involved. Candidates must be Canadian citizens who are 18 years of age or older, and you must either be a resident of Mississauga or you or your spouse own or rent property in the City.
The forms are available online, but to register you must appear in person with all required documents at the City’s election office located at 3235 Mavis Rd.
A fee of $200 is required to run for Mayor and $100 for City Councillor. A candidate must also submit the nomination signatures of 25 residents who support them.
While the election vote is on October 26, the final day to register to be on the ballot is August 21.
The salary for the mayor and city councillors is approximately $233,000 – which is a combination of about $100,000 for the municipal portion with the rest as the Peel Regional councillor amount. This is significantly more than what Toronto councillors make – which was recently boosted to $174,000.
While Carolyn Parrish is expected to run for re-election it is unclear at the time of writing if former Mayor Bonnie Crombie will run again following her resignation as Ontario Liberal leader.
