Goreway Bridge officially opens

Seven years after its construction was first announced, the Goreway Bridge officially opens. Vehicles were first able to drive across the new overpass on October 15.

The bridge — a partnership between the Cities of Brampton and Mississauga — was first proposed in response to lengthy wait times as much as 20 minutes to allow for trains to cross along a CN rail line.

Instead of there being a train crossing at Goreway Drive, the road now goes over the rail line. The project also involved the construction of new retaining walls, culverts, waterman’s sewers and road widening.

The construction involved the closing of Goreway Drive between Brandon Gate Drive and Kenview Boulevard for over a year starting in 2019.

While the announcement of construction took place in 2018, Mayor Carolyn Parrish wrote on social media that the project was in fact 40 years in the making. That’s how long the public and elected officials have been discussing the possibility of such an overpass.

The bridge is “really an amazing addition to the transportation system in Malton and a great connection Brampton,” Mayor Parrish wrote. “No more 21 minute waits while slow trains shuffle back and forth into the CN yard. Enjoy Malton folks!”

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown also celebrated the opening of the bridge. “By eliminating the at-grade CN rail crossing just south of Steeles Avenue, the project will enhance intercity traffic flow, reduce congestion and address longstanding delays,” Mayor Brown wrote.
