Bridging the Digital Divide

Affordable Internet and Tech Access in Scarborough

In Scarborough, the phrase “plugged in” means more just knowing the neighbourhood gossip. It means being connected to work, school, family, and even that glorious 2 a.m. online shopping spree. But here’s the digital plot twist: not everyone in Scarborough has equal access to the internet or devices. The result? A real-life version of FOMO—Fear of Missing Out (on Opportunity).

Let’s face it, when your WiFi signal is weaker than your morning coffee, it’s hard to keep up. For many families, affording high-speed internet or a reliable computer is yet another monthly challenge. Enter the heroes: community initiatives like ConnectTO, which partners with the city to offer affordable internet, and our beloved Toronto Public Library, whose WiFi lending program turns your local branch into Scarborough’s hottest tech café.

With ConnectTO, the City of Toronto has been rolling out lower-cost broadband in under-served areas. This means more kids can log into Zoom class without lag, and parents can work from home without hearing, “Mom! The screen froze again!” Meanwhile, Scarborough’s libraries have started lending out WiFi hotspots and even Chromebooks—so anyone with a library card can get online, no tech degree required.

Still, challenges persist. Some high-rise apartments can’t get decent connections. Language barriers and digital know-how gaps mean even when devices are available, not everyone knows how to get online safely. And while teaching Grandma how to use TikTok may never be a family success story, at least she can email the grandkids.

What’s working? Local organizations are stepping up, offering free digital skills workshops, device donation drives, and pop-up repair clinics (because sometimes, turning it off and on again just isn’t enough).

Scarborough is closing the digital gap, one hotspot at a time. If you know someone struggling to get online, send them to the library, a community centre, or check out ConnectTO.ca. Because everyone deserves a slice—whether it’s pie, pizza, or WiFi.

Ready to join the movement? Donate a device, volunteer, or just share this info. In Scarborough, we keep each other connected—literally!
