READERS RESPOND TO FIREWORKS DEBATE

Should the City of Mississauga outright ban fireworks outside of Victoria Day and Canada Day? So far, Mayor Parrish has held off on doing so?

I vote no fireworks! Our fireworks season here in Mississauga is through the summer, which happens to be the hottest time of the year with a very high potential for fires to break out. Our homes are built so close together where the city has allowed fireworks to go off. These properties are not that big and other cultures have no respect for others. I believe that all fireworks should be city run on special occasions, not on our own property til all hours of the night! Thanks for listening.

Good day. I have lived in Streetsville for the last 18 years. Only for the last four years are we experiencing subnormal behaviour regarding fireworks during Diwali celebrations. Until now I did enjoy looking when people were happy and celebrating their culture. The last few years things are far from normal. It is simply too much, too loud. Mornings after there is mess everywhere, dirt in driveways. There is no consideration that neighbors have dogs and sleeping children. Yes, I am voting to ban all private fireworks – at least until some learn that they are not on a deserted island but in a community and not everyone belongs to this particular tradition Everything has its place and time, starting with church, celebration, rest and work. Let’s keep this country safe and clean. Thank you for listening

Of course this is the fault of City staff who for some reason want to do things differently than others. The sale, purchase, possessing or setting off these stupid devices are banned in Brampton while here our workers say they are OK.

In fact our City has created a negative racist situation. That is because although fireworks on Victoria Day, Canada Day and New Years are for the benefit of all Canadians, someone also influenced the city to allow them on Chinese New Year and Diwali. That is racist because if a group insists on allowing specific groups to set them off every group should also be asked but our city never did that thus creating a situation of racism.

The real issue however is that we in this city think that allowing amateurs to handle explosives, which not only disturbs citizens but also their pets. The solution is to ban all fireworks 100% and let those who enjoy them go to public displays.
