Police issue summer cellphone pickpocket warning

Toronto Police are warning the public to be on the lookout for thieves targeting cellphones this summer. Over May and June police say they’ve received an increase in reports of pickpockets stealing cell phones from people while they’re out in public, even from zipped purses and bags. “Police are requesting members of the public be mindful of their cell phones when out enjoying public events, concerts, parades, festivals, and any crowded public spaces throughout the summer,” reads a news release put out by 14th Division on June 26.

In order to reduce the chance of being targeted by thieves police recommend taking the following actions:

  • Stay alert when you’re out at festivals or any large events.
  • Ensure your phone and other valuables are never out of your sight.
  • Make sure that your phone and other valuables are always secured close to your body.
  • Don’t put cell phones in your back pocket where a thief can easily grab it.

If you’ve been the victim of a theft, police ask that you report it. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-1400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477.)
