Meadowvale Hockey Association sees surge in Ice Puppys enrolment

A whole lot more “Ice Puppys” are now lacing up their skates, according to enrolment numbers from the Meadowvale Minor Hockey Association (MMIHA).

This past season, which came to a close at the end of March, the MMIHA reported a 30% increase compared to the year before for their littlest players — the 4-6 year old “Ice Puppys.”

Niki Beneteau, the director of the Ice Puppys, told the Meadowvale Pulse that the registration increase is, “largely due to the brand recognition of the quality of our community focussed program.” Beneteau also said she’s excited to now see graduates of the program return to enrol their own kids.

In a comment emailed to the Meadowvale Pulse, a parent of a current Ice Puppys player said, “Having played with Meadowvale Minor Hockey Association when I was a child, I made lifelong friends and had so many nurturing experiences that I wanted my own children to benefit from the programs offered by MMHA. Seeing the enjoyment my daughter has playing hockey and being rewarded with life skills both on and off the ice is what it’s all about.”

On March 22 and 23, the MMHA celebrated its “All Star” weekend. This end-of season annual bash included a silent auction fundraiser, coaches’ game, and final championship day for the Ice Puppys, featuring games, food, music and trophies. For almost 50 years, the hockey association has been known in the community for its volunteer-led youth hockey house league and ‘A’ level competitive programs.

The Ice Puppys is, for many kids, their first introduction to skating and hockey. The focus is on fun, safety and early skills development.Registration for next year’s Ice Puppys and House League programs opens on April 27.
