Ward 9 is rapidly emerging as the heartbeat of a healthier, more vibrant Mississauga, where the vision of active living, family fun, and strong community ties is becoming a daily reality. As the city invests in innovative recreation spaces and as local leaders champion grassroots engagement, residents are rediscovering the joy and benefits of staying active and connected right in their own backyard. Considering my background as a fitness professional, I am thrilled !
A Community Built on Movement and Connection
Picture a neighbourhood where laughter fills the air, parks are alive with families playing, and neighbours greet each other as they walk, cycle, or jog through safe, welcoming streets. This is the future families tell me they want to see: a place where health and togetherness are woven into the fabric of everyday life. In city-speak, it is called “activating our common spaces.”
Staying active in Ward 9 goes far beyond fitness. It’s about unlocking a higher quality of life for everyone. Whether it’s a stroll around Lake Aquitaine, a street hockey game on the court at West Credit Secondary School, or joining a community bike ride, regular movement boosts physical health, sharpens minds, and lifts spirits. The evidence is clear: physical activity reduces stress, lowers the risk of chronic disease, and helps people feel more connected to their community.
Revitalizing Parks and Recreation for All
My vision for Meadowvale is a community bursting with opportunities to get moving. The city has invested in revitalizing parks with new playgrounds, pickleball courts, and solar-powered shade benches, making it easier and more enjoyable for everyone to get outside and play.
One of the most exciting additions is the new 5-hole disc golf course at Lake Aquitaine Park, designed specifically for beginners and families. We completed the installation late last year, and Jeff and Cara at ChainLink have been lovely to work with. Open year-round and free to use, the course invites residents of all ages to try something new, stay active, and connect with others. I hope more neighbourhoods repurpose greenspace for this sport.
These improvements are more than just infrastructure upgrades – they’re investments in collective well-being. They create spaces where families can come together, friendships can flourish, and healthy habits can take root.
Family Fun, Right at Home
There’s something special about families gathering outdoors. Whether it’s fishing at Lake Aquitaine, joining a guided nature walk, or exploring local parks, these moments create lasting memories and strengthen the bonds that make neighbourhoods feel like home. This is what I remember about growing up in this area, and this is what I want today’s families to feel. Choosing to play and explore locally isn’t just cost-effective, it’s a way to rediscover the richness of what’s right here in Ward 9.
Local amenities and events offer countless low to no-cost ways to stay active and entertained. From public events and tree plantings to community gardening and spring clean-ups, there are endless opportunities to get involved, meet neighbours, and make a positive impact-without breaking the bank.
Supporting Community, Saving Money
Every dollar saved on travel or expensive activities is a dollar that stays in the community, supporting local programs and helping Ward 9 thrive. When residents use neighbourhood parks and participate in local events, they’re also strengthening the local economy and fostering a sense of belonging.
Celebrate Active Living at Lake Aquitaine Park
Residents experienced this vision in action at a free family event on Friday, May 16 at Lake Aquitaine Park. Hosted by Community and Animal Services, Peel Paramedics, ChainLink Disc Golf, and the GTAA street team, the event celebrated the new disc golf course with opportunities to learn the sport, win prizes, and gather valuable tips on safety and wellness. Download the free UDisc App to get the most out of your disc golf experience.
