Nina Tangri re-elected as local MPP for third term

One of the most surprising results across the entire province was Liberal leader Bonnie Crombie failing to win her own seat.

Change was clearly not on the minds of Meadowvale residents when they went to vote in the provincial election. The Feb. 27 election results for Mississauga – Streetsville were similar numbers to the previous 2022 election, with Ontario Progressive Conservative MPP Nina Tangri re-elected for a third term.

The Liberal candidate Jill Promoli came in second with 17,287.

The NDP and Green candidates came in a far third and fourth, with just over 2000 and 1000 votes respectively.

This election was something of a rematch for Tangri and Promoli. While Tangri received more votes than last time around, so did Promoli. The Liberals actually narrowed the gap but it wasn’t enough to pull off a victory.

Tangri, who had been serving as Associate Minister of Housing prior to the election campaign, took to social media to thank her supporters.

“I’m incredibly humbled to be re-elected as your MPP for a third term. I don’t take this responsibility lightly and will continue to advocate for the issues that matter to us as a community,” Tangri wrote.

“Under Premier Doug Ford’s leadership, we will always protect Ontario workers, families, businesses and continue to grow the economy. A special shoutout to Team Tangri along with my family for their support. I couldn’t have done this without you. Let’s get to work!”

Promoli serves as the Peel District School Board trustee for Mississauga Wards 6 and 11. She like-wise posted to social media to thank her supporters.

“To all the residents of Mississauga — Streetsville, being your Ontario Liberal candidate has been an honour and a privilege, and I am so thankful for the time you’ve spent talking with me and my team through this election. Thank you all for your kindness and support.”

Promoli continued: “Congratulations to Nina Tangri on her re-election last night. I wish great success to her and her team as they work to serve this wonderful community.”

The Mississauga Streetsville campaign was largely uneventful, but other ridings experienced a different outcome.

A major surprise in the province was Liberal leader Bonnie Crombie losing her own seat. The former Mayor of Mississauga ran in Mississauga East—Cooksville but lost to Ontario PC candidate Silvia Gualtieri.

The seat had no incumbent as it was previously held by Kaleed Rasheed, who was re-elected in 2022 as an Ontario PC MPP but resigned from the party to sit as an independent in 2023 in relation to the Greenbelt controversy.

Crombie has stated she intends to remain on as Liberal leader, but will not have a seat in the legislature.
