A social club for retired Scarborough residents is inviting more people to come and join the fun. The Scarborough Centre Probus Club is letting it be known that all are welcome to become new members.
Whether it’s their monthly meetings in Agincourt or their group outings to local restaurants, the local Probus Club has a lot to offer.
"I am hopeful that by publishing an article in your newspaper, that retired and semi-retired people in Scarborough will learn that there is a Probus organization in their community that caters to their new interests, hobbies and social needs,” local chapter President Graham Patterson told MPulse Scarborough.
There are almost 250 clubs and 33,000 members of the Probus network in Canada. “Probus has grown over the years into a global network of clubs open to all retired and semi-retired people who simply want to meet for fun, friendship and fellowship,” explains an info sheet for new members. “It is non-sectarian, non-political, and has no agenda other than social gathering. New friendships are happening every day, and a surprising number of re-connections with past friends or acquaintances have also occurred."
The main event put on by Scarborough Centre Probus Club is their monthly meeting, which features a guest speaker and involves lots of social time. The gathering is free to attend and they provide coffee and cookies.
But they also ventures into other activities. They also recently wrapped up an “eating your way around the world” tour, where members went to different restaurants throughout Scarborough together to experience cuisine from as many countries around the world as they could find.
The core group of diners were about a dozen women who gave themselves the fun acronym of RODEO, which stands for “retired old dames eating out”. The diners each had a mock-up passport and flags and maps of the countries the restaurants represented.
“I think this activity is a good illustration of the inventiveness, companionship, fun and enjoyment provided through the Club to its members,” Patterson told MPulse.
The Probus Club meets on the 3rd Thursday of every month from 10am-12pm at the Agincourt Community Centre on 31 Glen Watford Drive.
New members can just show up but you can also reach out to Graham Patterson at pres.scarboroughcentreprobus@gmail.com or to Membership Coordinator Paula Hogan at paulabrinehogan@hotmail.com.
