Deadline coming up to register as candidate or worker in municipal election

Toronto needs people to submit to work on election day, Oct. 26.

With less than three months to go until the Toronto Municipal Election, now is the time to register to run as a candidate or to apply for a job as an election worker.

The deadline for registering as a candidate is 2pm on August 21. To run for Mayor or Councillor you must be a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years old, a resident of the City of Toronto or the owner or tenant of land in the city or the spouse of an owner or tenant, not legally prohibited from voting and not disqualified by any legislation from holding municipal office.

To run for School Board Trustee, the same qualifications apply, except instead of being a resident of the City of Toronto, you must be a resident in the area of jurisdiction of the board.

There are four school boards in Toronto: English Public, English Catholic, French Public and French Catholic. While both English boards only cover Toronto schools, the French boards are much larger, representing schools across Southern Ontario.

New this election, school boards in Ontario can have only a maximum of 12 trustees. For the Toronto District School Board, this means one trustee will represent two wards.

The City of Toronto will host an virtual and in-person information session for candidates on August 24 about how to manage a campaign.

The city is also hiring workers to work on election day on October 26. Various jobs are available and pay between $280 and $450 for the 12 to 13 hour shift. In-person and online training beforehand is mandatory and takes approximately 2.5 hours to complete. Eligibility for election day jobs include legal entitlement to work in Canada, being at least 18 years old, not registered to run as a candidate or third-party advertiser, not an immediate family member of a candidate, and not actively working to support or oppose a candidate.

Job descriptions, qualifications, and the application portal are all available on the City of Toronto’s website.
