City council set to approve official plan for Scarborough Centre

City council set to approve official plan for Scarborough Centre. Plan supports 72,000 more residents moving to Scarborough Centre.

Toronto City Council is set to approve a new official plan for the area of Scarborough in the vicinity of Scarborough Town Centre.

It’s a plan that, as previously reported in MPulse, will see the Scarborough Centre neighbourhood look significantly different in the years ahead. A conceptual drawing of the plan shows dozens of new condo towers in the neighbourhood, many of them over 40 storeys tall. It also calls for a major increase in bike lanes throughout the area.

The objection of the plan, according to City staff, is to encourage “the transformation of Scarborough Centre into a vibrant place to live, work, and play, while maintaining its role as a major economic hub in Toronto’s east end. The recommended Secondary Plan anticipates accommodating approximately 72,000 residents and 21,000 workers over the next 30+ years.”

While the conceptual drawings may feel like news to many residents, the process around updating the previous plan from 2005 began in 2018, and included a couple dozen in-person events as well as three draft plans.

Once passed, the official plan will be used to guide departmental decision making when it comes to building approvals, road and bike lane designs and the creation of community services and infrastructure.
